Why go to Cape Verde?
An island paradise where saying 'might not wear shoes all week' is a totally acceptable statement to make.
Cape Verde is a beach bum’s dream, a place where you’ll find golden beaches, the bluest of blue skies and sunshine in (buckets and) spades. Tucked off the coast of Senegal, this island archipelago is full of vibrant Portuguese personality with a West African flourish. There are nine inhabited islands to explore, so you’ll find enough beach, breeze and culture to keep you entertained – all without breaking a sweat (unless you want to, of course).
When it comes to landscapes, Cape Verde is a world of contrasts. On the island of Fogo, you’ll meet volcanic peaks and black-sand beaches that look almost extra-terrestrial. Over in Mindelo, on São Vicente, you’ll find Cape Verde’s cultural heartbeat, the place to go for seafood feasts served with a side of music, art and good vibes. The island’s famous carnival is Cape Verde’s answer to Rio, so if you time it right, you’re in for a treat that’s loud, lively and unforgettable.
And if eat, sleep, relax, repeat isn’t enough for you, then there’s also plenty of watersports: from riding the breeze on a windsurf board to diving and snorkelling with manta rays, whales and turtles for company. Or, if “sport” sounds suspiciously like “effort,” there’s always floating in a volcanic crater at the Pedra de Lume salt flats. In between exploring (sunbathing), you’ll enjoy the local cuisine; a fusion of Portuguese, West African and Brazilian flavours. Cachupa stew and grogue (the island’s rum) are must-tries.
Do it all or nothing at all, Cape Verde’s got something for everyone. So long as you like sunshine, that is.
