Things to do in Larnaca
Although much of the evidence of the ancient Greek settlement is long gone, there are still a number of historical sites that are worth visiting here. The 9th-century Church of Saint Lazarus is one, along with the 12th-century Larnaca Castle: a fort which now houses a small museum for visitors.
What's interesting about Larnaca's old sites is that they stand shoulder to shoulder with the modern and trendy marina and the lively Kastella Beach, which has Blue Flag status. If you're travelling with kids, this is definitely the beach to be, as there's a smooth entrance to the water and a playground.
Larnaca is massively popular with divers, and for a good reason. Just off the coast lies the wreck of the MS Zenobia ferry, which sank shortly after leaving the harbour in 1980. You'll need to be certified to get close to the sea bed, but you can still view the wreck even if you're not a diver. As the top of the wreck is at about 18m, you can get a good glance by snorkelling or on a glass-bottom boat trip.
The main shopping area in Larnaca is Ermou Street, and the most common souvenir is Lefkara lace. This is made in the nearby village of Lefkara and is famous for its unique hemstitch and edgings. You'll find plenty of lace in Larnaca, but if you did want to pay a visit to the village, it's about a 25-minute drive away. It's nestled away in the Troodos Mountains, and it's a very pretty little town.
Larnaca's Dining and Nightlife
Seafood is really popular here, and the promenade is filled with tiny seafood restaurants serving up the catch of the day. Just off the promenade is a neighbourhood known as Laiki Geitonia, which is where you'll find Larnaca's nightlife. It tends to be on the quieter side, with a few low-key bars and small nightclubs. But if you were looking for something with a bit more energy, it's a 40-minute drive to Ayia Napa. There are taxi services and buses between the two cities.
