Things to do in Hurghada
Hurghada is probably best known for its hidden underwater attractions. From colourful coral reefs to all sorts of tropical fish, there are loads to see under the surface. One of the most popular dive sites here is El Fanous, which is about a 30-minute boat ride from the marina. If you love sealife, you won’t be disappointed. Blue-spotted stingrays, sand rays, moray eels, and octopuses can all be seen.
Not a diver? Not a problem. Hop on a boat for the hour-long journey over to the Giftun Islands. Mahmya beach is a great place to splash about and snorkel. Even if you don’t want to go underwater, you might still spot a dolphin or two. There’s a sort of Caribbean-private-island vibe here, so if you are looking for a bit of luxury, the Giftun Islands are a good way to spend a day.
Hurghada isn’t just about its water attractions. It’s got a lively downtown filled with fancy hotels, cool restaurants, entertainment, and attractions. If you want to get away with the kids, this is a great place, as there is tons for them to do. There’s an aquarium, water park, and sand sculpture complex.
There are plenty of shopping opportunities here, too. The Sekalla high street is lined with shops selling all sorts of souvenirs, and around the new marina is where you’ll find branded fashion items. Haggling isn’t just OK here; it’s expected. Everyone does it, so there’s no need to feel uncomfortable.
Hurghada is a very modern destination. The town itself was founded in 1905 and became a booming resort in the 1980s. So there’s not much in the way of history here. But you can get a glimpse into authentic Egyptian life in the resort’s El-Dahar neighbourhood. This is Hurghada’s ‘Old Town’, filled with lively bazaars. You’ll find that prices here are usually a little lower than in the main resort.
Day trips to Luxor from Hurghada
If you really want to explore more of Egypt’s history, lots of tour companies offer day trips to Luxor on the banks of the River Nile. This is a city that’s bursting with local history. You can see the ruins of the old temples and tomb complexes and the remains of ancient worker villages. It’s about 4 hour’s journey each way, so make sure to be ready for a full day out!
Food and drink in Hurghada
Hurghada caters to visitors from all over the world, so many of the restaurants serve up international cuisine rather than traditional Egyptian fare. There are pizza restaurants, burger places, Japanese izakayas, and more. There are also lots of familiar fast food places if you want something quick and easy.
As for drinks, tea is huge here. Why not try an Egyptian karkade, an iced tea made from hibiscus? Or a yansoon tea made from anise, or a ganzabeel tea made from ginger? Want something a little stronger? Many downtown bars, and bars in the resort hotels, will serve alcohol to visitors.
