If you’re looking for a city break that’ll make you gawp, gawk and say “wow” at least 37 times, look to Luxor: a city with more history than a whole library of textbooks.
On the east bank of the Nile, Karnak Temple reigns supreme. Its massive columns and towering obelisks are like a masterclass in grandeur. Come nighttime, Luxor Temple comes alive with lights, as if there’s a pharaoh’s after-hours soirée inside. If exploring all things ancient ever gets boring (it doesn’t), the city itself hums with life, with bustling souks filled with colourful spices and trinkets, and riverside cafés where sweet tea flows as freely as the Nile.
Like a giant open-air museum, the other side of the river also has history on its Top Trumps card. Discover the Valley of the Kings and Tutankhamun’s golden resting place; Hatshepsut’s temple which rises out of the cliffs with all the drama of an Oscar-worthy set design; and the Colossi of Memnon, two huge stone statues that stand as the guards of the landscape.
Then there’s the Nile itself, the ultimate backdrop for a sunset cruise. Take a riverboat past lush fields and palm-dotted villages with temples like Edfu and Kom Ombo making cameo appearances along the way. Back in town, the bazaars beckon with everything from handmade treasures to the softest Egyptian cotton to discover.
One thing’s for sure – history feels a lot less distant when it’s this spectacular.
