Why fly to Tangier?

A port town with a literary twist, Tangier has been inspiring travel pilgrimages for decades. Deeply creative, this town was a mecca for painters in the 19th century. In the 50s and 60s, its cafes were stalked by Beat Writers - including William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac and Jane Bowles - and even the Rolling Stones spent short stints here, drinking in the creative juices (and Moroccan mint tea, no doubt). But Tangier is also a well-versed in the more physical pleasures. Tagines here are laced with fresh fish, the newly built boutique hotels plush, and the Moorish medina a sight to behold.

Best time to visit

Visit Tangier in May for lovely warm temperatures and to make the most of the area’s beaches, which still have some secluded patches left. It’s still lovely and buzzy at this time, but you’ll have less of a fight to get a table in one of the local restaurants, and you’ll avoid the baking heat of high summer.

Avoid the crowds

Visit Tangier in March or April and the temperatures are much cooler compared to the soaring heat you’ll experience in the summer months. The city is also way less crowded, and hikes to the hilltop kasbah are much more pleasant. You can also expect lower prices as the busy tourist season is yet to kick off.
