Why fly to Volos?

Steeped in history and mythology and surrounded by mountains and sea, Volos is ideal for a short break.

Volos is one of Greece’s most beautiful cities, decorated by splendid churches and ornate mansions. The city streets lead to a charming seafront and port dotted with yachts and tiny tavernas, the famous Tsipouradiko.

A good place to start exploring is Argonauts Avenue, which snakes around the seafront and along the port. It’s one of the prettiest parts of the town, where colourful fishing boats bob on the water. Like the rest of Volos, it’s steeped in history and mythology - Jason and the Argonauts are said to have set sail from here. Indeed, history buffs and families will love the replica of ancient ship Argo, which sits at the port.

Volos is the kind of place that’s easy to explore on foot, but anyone looking for a change of pace can hire a bicycle and see the city via the well-designed cycle lane network – which takes you past city’s ever-changing architecture, from ancient city mansions to the colourful resort towns that spill out along the coast.

Volos is a popular university town, and the influx of students means the downtown area – Iasonos, Dimitriados, and Ermou – is home to plenty of lively bars and clubs.

Sightseers will love the castle of Volo, and the waterfront church of Agioi Konstantinos and Eleni is also lovely.

Just outside the city centre lies Goritsa Hill, which has terrific views across the region. It’s also home to the Panagia Tripa of Goritsa, a tiny, fascinating church built inside a cave.

Ancient history fans can head to the nearby archeological sights of Sesklo and Dimini, while hikers, climbers and horse riders can book a trip to Mount Pelion. With plenty of local ferry connections and sailing options, Volos is ideal for a few days of sightseeing before heading onto the Pelion peninsular and the Sporades islands.

While Volos is a year-round destination with a mild Mediterranean climate, June, July and August are when the majority of visitors choose to fly in. These high summer months are hot, but not unbearably so, in large part thanks to the sea and mountain breezes that permeate the city. It's primetime for spending long sunny days at the beaches near Anavros or further down the Pagasetic Gulf.

Avoid the crowds

To escape the hustle and bustle of high summer, fly to Volos in May or September. During these months you'll still be able to enjoy the beach but the slightly cooler weather means it's just right for exploring the area on the city's extensive bike paths and discovering the incredible foothills of Mount Pelion, the mythical home of the centaurs.
