Things to do in Dubrovnik Croatia
The highlight of Dubrovnik is its UNESCO-recognised walled old town. This ancient, car-free part of the city is a maze of tiny streets, filled with cosy shops and small restaurants. The main route through the old town, called Stradun, runs between two of the three gates and is one of the best places in the city to pick up souvenirs. Almost every shop will be selling bagfuls of dried lavender and lavender-scented goods made from flowers grown locally on the nearby Adriatic island of Hvar.
One of the most popular things to do here is to walk around the 2 kilometres of 13th-century wall surrounding the old town. It's a great way to enjoy the city and get a feel for its rich history. It's also a chance to walk in the footsteps of the fictional Lannister family. The walls were used as the filming spot for Kings Landing, the capital of the seven kingdoms in the TV show Game of Thrones.
While the old town is very much a busy, on-the-go city, the rest of Dubrovnik is much more relaxed. There are many natural sights to enjoy in the area, where you can experience a breath of calmness.
One of the best natural attractions is Mount Srd, which you can access right from the city centre. It's 412 metres in height, so, as you can imagine, there are fantastic views from the top. You'll be able to see the outline of the historic walls and the terracotta rooftops of the old town buildings. There's a walking path all the way up to the top, or you can take it easy with a quick 4-minute cable car ride.
It's worth booking a Dubrovnik flight just for the beautiful beaches nearby. The nearest beach to the city is Banje Beach, offering lovely views of the city walls. If you walk, drive or take public transportation about 3.5km north up the Croatian coast, you'll come across the quieter, more serene pebble beaches of the Lapad peninsula.
Try out Croatian cuisine in Dubrovnik
No trip to Dubrovnik is complete without sampling the local food. There are some great dishes to try, which are believed to have been invented in Dubrovnik itself. The most famous is zelena menestra, which translates to 'green stew'. It's a casserole of ham and bacon, mixed with cabbage and kale to give it an iconic green hue. For dessert, you can try the rozata. It's a sweet Dubrovnik treat that's like a cross between a custard and a creme brulee. It's incredibly rich and very creamy.
