  • The Austrian culinary capital has one of the highest concentrations of Michelin-star restaurants and chefs in Europe. You'll find the city's most exclusive restaurants in the old town next to the Salzach river. It’s best to book a table in advance, and prices are what you'd expect from a world-class restaurant. But you really are paying for the best and a three-course meal at a Michelin-star restaurant is a holiday memory that will last forever.
  • The cafes and bistros near Alter Markt are great places for lunch or a mid-morning coffee. Some of the cafes are hundreds of years old and count Mozart and Haydn among their former patrons. You'll also find tiny bakeries producing fresh bread and morning croissants, as well as opulent cake shops. Pick up a slice (or maybe a wedge) of Black Forest gateau, then find a nice spot on the public benches offering fantastic views across the river.
  • For a fun-packed night out, head to one of Salzburg's famous beer halls. Find a couple of spots on the long wooden benches, then wait for your server to drop off a giant jug of freshly-brewed beer with bar snacks, burgers, and bratwurst sausages slathered in curry sauce or sauerkraut. Other places have a pour-your-own beer policy. Just take your jug up to the beer fountains when you're ready for a refill. Most beer halls put on live shows and bands, especially on the weekend. The atmosphere gets lively, so get ready for a singalong.
  • Lindenhofstrasse is where you'll find Salzburg's oldest beer halls, with some dating back to the 15th century. They are inside former monasteries and still use ancient brewing techniques. Some of the beers are brewed for up to 16 weeks. Lindenhofstrasse is also where you'll discover Austria's biggest beer garden. It's the ideal place to spend a sunny afternoon.
  • The eye-catching Hohensalzburg Fortress rests on a small hill overlooking the city. It has stunning 360-degree views of the city and surrounding snow-capped mountains. This imposing medieval castle has played a central role in Salzburg's history for almost 1,000 years. You should visit the Golden Chamber, a magnificent ceremonial hall filled with historical paintings, gilded carvings, rich ornaments and a four-metre-high fireplace. Then take a tour through the royal apartments, the former private quarters of Salzburg's royalty.
  • Salzburg has a rich and proud cultural history. Soak some up with a trip to the birthplace of the composer Mozart. Learn more about his fascinating life by spending an afternoon at the Mozart Museum, inside his former home along, a five-minute stroll from the Salzach riverbank. You'll discover several other interesting sites and spots across the river, including Salzburg Cathedral and the Austrian Museum of Modern Art.
  • Salzburg has several indoor shopping centres around the city. The Europark Salzburg has over 130 shops, cafes, restaurants, and a play area for kids. The Forum 1 mall is right next to Salzburg Central train station. This glass-roofed modern indoor mall has a range of designer and independent stores. You'll also find some of your favourite fast-food outlets. McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Park is a 15-minute drive from the city centre. It's well worth the short trip. These stores have discounts of up to 70 per cent on brand-name fashions.
  • Getreidegasse Avenue in Old Town is Salzburg's most famous shopping street. It's a lively boulevard where iconic stores like Louis Vuitton are just a short walk from market stalls selling second-hand retro clothing. Discerning customers can pick up some made-to-measure fashions from the exclusive tailors. Or why not try on some tracht? This traditional Austrian clothing is making a big comeback among Salzburg’s trendy set. You might find you look great in lederhosen.
