Dubrovnik Riviera Holidays

A wild-at-heart Croatian hotspot

Sun kissed villages with charming terracotta-topped houses surrounded by olive groves and pine forests, lapped by the shimmering Adriatic Sea – the Dubrovnik Riviera is phenomenally pretty. The stone ramparts of Dubrovnik’s famous city walls are often visible in the distance, while the verdant delta of the Neretva river is also in sight, and imposing mountains strewn with maquis shrubs surround much of the coastline. It’s a nature lover’s dream.

Dubrovnik Riviera holidays really do offer some of the finest scenery in the Mediterranean. And that’s before even mentioning its pristine, undeveloped beaches and coves, or the sun-dappled vineyards and olive groves of the wider Zupa Dubrovacka area – where foodies will enjoy sampling the locally produced wine and olive oil at charming restaurants. So whether it’s spectacular natural scenery or next-level beaches you’re after, holidays to the Dubrovnik Riviera have got it covered.

Your Dubrovnik Riviera questions, answered

In Croatia, more specifically, the Dubrovnik Riviera stretches south along the coast between Dubrovnik and Cavtat for around 20 kilometres, and is officially known as the Zupa Dubrovacka area.
While Dubrovnik is often seen as a beach destination, it’s also good for city breaks all year round. You have mild Mediterranean weather and you can enjoy historic architecture, shopping, museums and cultural events, and Croatian food. You can ride the Dubrovnik Cable Car for views across the red rooftops or take a tour of Dubrovnik’s old town walls. In the evenings, Dubrovnik has a range of bars and clubs with everything from live music to DJs.
The extraordinary scenery and year-round sun mean it’s always a great time to visit. Temperatures are at their warmest from May to September, while winters are mild.
Dubrovnik is compact, so it’s easy to explore the main sites in two or three days. You can take a tour to see the major attractions, or simply stick to the old town and enjoy the historic vibe. But, if you do decide to stay longer, you’ll find plenty to do. You can explore the unspoiled Lapad Peninsula, which has natural beaches and rolling green hills, or take a boat trip to one of the nearby islands.
For the freedom to explore the entire coastline, it’s worth renting a car (or using taxis). There are also regular buses that make the journey to Dubrovnik city.
One of the most popular things to do on Dubrovnik holidays is to walk the city walls. The walls that surround the old town are nearly two kilometres long and, as you walk around, you get a unique view of the city. It takes around two hours to complete the walk, and there are about 5,000 steps overall, so it is quite a workout. If you’re visiting on a hot day, you should cover up and make sure you pack supplies like water.
There are ways you can enjoy a holiday in Dubrovnik on a budget. One way to cut costs is to book outside main tourist areas, like the old town, as that’s where you’ll find the highest hotel rates. The town is walkable and has good bus services, so there’s no need for accommodation in the centre. Eating out and drinking is relatively cheap in Croatia compared to many European countries. Most of the major attractions are inexpensive too, so it’s perfect for a budget break.
Dubrovnik is close to several unspoiled green spaces. The city is surrounded by hills and pine-tree-covered mountains, so you never feel you’re far from nature. Head out to the Lapad Peninsula and you can visit Forest Park Velika and Mala Petka, a huge park with coastal hiking trails and woodland. There are also a few city parks like Gradac Park, which has views across the city and out to sea, and Bogisicev Park, which has shady woodland trails and a playground.
There are several islands you can visit from Dubrovnik, and most boat tours leave regularly from the old town or Gruz Harbour. Lokrum Island is popular because of its unspoiled beaches and rocky coastline, and it was used as a location for Game of Thrones. Lopud Island is a good day out if you like sightseeing as the island has medieval churches and a monastery. One of the most remote islands is Lastovo, where you can canoe in the clear waters or enjoy empty beaches. You can even stay overnight to enjoy this peaceful paradise.
