When’s the best time to visit Hersonissos?

The summer is the most popular time for holidays in Hersonissos and a lot's going on during the season. Panagia Festiva in August is a fine chance to experience traditional Cretan music and dance, while the Star Beach water park has foam parties and festivals. September is an excellent time to visit as you can enjoy cheaper rates and the yearly International Folk Festival. April and May are also generally inexpensive months, and the weather starts warming up around this time so you get plenty of sunshine.

What day trips can I do?

For a change of pace, visit nearby Koutouloufari, a small, peaceful village nestled among olive groves. Or take a brisk walk along Aposelemi Gorge, with its gentle hiking trail.

What are the beaches like near Hersonissos?

The beaches closest to Hersonissos have soft sands and clear blue seas, but the main beach is quite narrow in places. You have to arrive early to stake out your spot. There are bars and restaurants on the main beach, so it has a lively atmosphere. There are quieter, more spacious beaches just a short drive away if you’re looking for somewhere to sunbathe and read a book. Hersonissos is well-placed to explore Northern Crete, and it’s just a short bus ride or cab to the party towns of Malia and Stalis, as well as smaller villages with quieter beaches.

Hersonissos, sometimes spelt Chersonissos, is on Crete’s northern coast. It’s in a convenient and well-connected location. You’re just 45 minutes from Heraklion with a regular bus, and just a short cab ride away there are several towns and small villages to explore. If you dislike long transfers on holiday, you’re in luck as Hersonissos is just 20-minutes from the airport, and you can pick up a taxi for a fixed price and avoid the long bus rides.
