A sleepy village with a mysterious cave
Pocket-sized Milatos is a place of two halves: the seafront area has a small port (which the fishing boats putter in and out of), a quiet shingle beach, and a handful of waterfront tavernas. The village lies a little inland, sitting prettily among olive groves. It’s home to more traditional tavernas, a bakery, and a Cretan coffee shop.
The village’s claim to fame is the Milatos Cave, a large cave with a fascinating history dating back to the Ottoman era. There’s even a tiny church inside! Just make sure your phone has a full battery, as you’ll need its torch to light your way.
Milatos is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area. You could hire a car and drive to nearby towns and villages, such as Agios Nikolaos, known for its traditional Greek charm and bustling marina and catch a boat over to the island of Spinalonga.
