A traditional sugarcube town

The whitewashed village of Psarou is nestled on Mykonos’ south-western shores, pulled up against a sandy beach of the same name. The area offers up the island’s trademark standout scenery, all sugarcube low-rise buildings surrounded by grassy peaks and fields of wildflowers. It’s a popular destination for Greek visitors, so holidays to Psarou have a more authentic flavour than lots of other island resorts. Think traditional restaurants serving local dishes, and cutesy shops and cafés. The beach is the main attraction – all white sand and pebble and gorgeous clear blue waves. There are countless other beaches to try out nearby, such as the sandy sweeps in Kavo Livadi and Agios Ioannis. Most are backed by atmospheric beach bars that attract big crowds at sunset. When it dips below the horizon, the DJ sets start and it’s all about dancing until dawn.
