Greek retreat with an epic past
Akrotiri, in the southwest of Santorini, is a rustic haven for those who want to slow down and take life at a relaxed pace when on holiday. Historically, however, the little town was rather busier. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Pompeii of the Aegean’, the ancient settlement of Akrotiri was a thriving centre of commerce in the Minoan empire before a volcanic eruption took place around the 17th century BC, burying the town in ash and forcing its evacuation.
Today, Akrotiri holidays are a particular favourite with history lovers who want to visit the ruins and marvel over the exquisitely preserved murals and multi-storey buildings of what was once an extremely advanced civilisation. But holidays to Akrotiri are also about revelling in the present village’s gentle pace of life, gorgeous scenery and photogenic nearby beaches. This happy, sun-kissed spot really is one for the ages.
