Watch out for the Northern Lights from your window

How about seeing the Northern Lights from your hotel window? The aptly named Borealis Hotel is a great place to spot the dancing waves of colour that have lit up the winter skies for thousands of years, while the hotel also offers dramatic year-round views towards the nearby mountains. Just a 10-minute drive from the Thingvellir National Park, the hotel is perfectly located for a thrilling Iceland escape.

When it comes to accommodation, you can either choose a hotel room or a private lodge. The room options range from standard doubles to superior triples and they all come with Wi-Fi, a private bathroom, a lounge area, a desk, and hot drinks facilities. As for the lodges, you can expect several bedrooms, a lounge area, a dining room, and cooking facilities – and you can also make full use of the hotel facilities.

If food’s your thing, you’re in for a treat at the Borealis Hotel. The creative restaurant serves a fusion of modern and traditional Icelandic flavours, using only the freshest local ingredients. When it’s time for a pre-dinner cocktail or a soothing nightcap, the hotel has a well-stocked bar. If you’re feeling brave, ask for a shot of the local spirit – brennivín – which is nicknamed ‘black death’ and will probably blow your socks off!

Further local highlights include the Ljósafoss Golf Course, which neighbours the hotel, and the Gullfoss Waterfall, which is about a 45-minute drive away.
