A real Tuscan treasure

Pisa may be best known for its world-famous gravity-defying leaning tower, but it’s certainly not the only thing worth shouting about in this dynamic and attractive Italian city. Maritime history, manicured gardens, a historic university, sublime Renaissance piazzas, impressive art collections, street art and the scenic River Arno – it’s hard to know where to start. Many choose to begin their Pisa holidays at the rather marvellous Piazza dei Miracoli – the ‘square of miracles’.

As well as being home to the world famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, you’ll find Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta, a spectacular, free-to-enter 11th-century cathedral. Another grand square that will stop you in your tracks is the Piazza delle Vettovaglie, where Pisa’s farmers’ market is regularly held. Here you can stock up on all kinds of top-quality Italian produce as gifts for those back home. Holidays to Pisa are also ideal if you want to spend time exploring the wider Tuscany region.

Pisa sits at its heart, just 12 kilometres from the pretty beach-lined coast and also not far from Tuscany’s capital Florence, the medieval town of Lucca and the Chianti wine region. With its history, grand monuments and excellent location, this Tuscan city is a real Italian superstar.

  • The Leaning Tower

    Take time to marvel at Pisa’s mind-bending architectural feat. This lop-sided bell tower is an example of medieval Romanesque-style architecture and contains more than 200 columns.

  • Pisa Luminara

    Each year on 16 June, San Ranieri, the patron saint of Pisa, is celebrated. Candles light up the city, followed by fireworks, and there’s a regatta the following day.

  • Hop on a bike

    Cycling is a fantastic way to explore Pisa – if you’re feeling adventurous you could even continue your ride into the bucolic Tuscan countryside outside the city.

  • Head to the Lungarnos

    Take your time exploring the streets which run adjacent to the River Arno – the ‘Lungarnos’ – where you’ll find all manner of bars and restaurants. It’s particularly pretty at sunset.
  • In Pisa, you'll eat Italian with a hearty Tuscan edge. You can start with toasted slices of crunchy bread as an appetizer. These might be spread with diced tomatoes or chicken livers. You might like the peasant-style soups, made with beans, potatoes and tomatoes and often served with rusk. You'll try Tuscan speciality hand-rolled spaghetti, called pici, and cinghiale, or wild boar. Another traditional regional dish, this usually comes in a thick sauce with pappardelle pasta.
  • Vegans will pick up on cecina chickpea pancakes, which can double as a snack or sandwich ingredient. You'll also find plenty of fresh vegetables and salads, soups and risottos. In Pisa, you're in Chianti wine country, with many local varieties you'll want to try. You should also order some Pisan Vinsanto dessert wine and perhaps a biscotti to go with it. For dessert, you might also try the pilgrim cake, with fruit, nuts and chocolate, or some of the wonderful Italian ice cream.
  • Pisa is a university city, so you'll find a lot of buzz in student areas. You can eat great food, drink, talk, listen to music or dance, depending on how active you're feeling after a day's sightseeing. You'll find cafes, taverns and bars on Via Lungarno, where you'll often hear live music. There are also a few clubs for the night owls. An alternative in high summer is to head out to the seaside at Marina di Pisa, where you can enjoy a sunset drink and a good meal.
  • You can also take an evening guided tour of the city, to avoid the heat and crowds of summer, or just stroll along the banks of the Arno. Well-lit pathways run alongside the old palaces where you can stop for cocktails or Pisa's best ice cream. At the weekend you might go to a jazz concert or see an opera or play performed in the 150-year-old Teatro Verdi.
  • Pisa holidays take you to one of the world's most photographed places. In the Square of Miracles, the Piazza dei Miracoli, you'll see the Leaning Tower, the Duomo cathedral and the Baptistery. This UNESCO World Heritage site also has a monumental cemetery and other historic buildings used as museums. Holidays to Pisa invite you to take walks across the bridges of the River Arno, or along the reconstructed medieval walls. You'll see fortresses and gardens, a famous modern mural and antique paintings, not to mention a historic university and some impressive Renaissance piazzas.
  • Pisa is in Tuscany, one of Italy's great wine-producing regions. You can just drive around visiting its many towns and villages to get a feel for the region. Florence isn't far if you want to nip in and have a peek at Michelangelo's David. You can get there by car or train in 60-90 minutes, drive to Tuscan beaches in 30 minutes or the Lido in 15.
  • Pisa's two main shopping streets are Corso Italia and the medieval Borgo Stretto. The first is a good area to shop if you're on a budget, while the second is your best bet for upscale designer boutiques and quality watches. Whatever you do, avoid the tacky souvenir shops around the Piazza dei Miracoli, unless you want a gimmicky Leaning Tower to take home. You'll also find good shops in Via Mercanti and Via dei Rigattieri. Everywhere around the centre, you'll see antique dealers selling paintings and old books.
  • If this is your thing, you'll love the Antiques and Handicrafts fair. This covers several streets near the Botanical Gardens and Museum on the second weekend of every month, except July and August. Not far from the Ponte de Mezzo bridge, you'll find the 100-year-old food market held on weekdays in the Piazza delle Vettovaglie. You should look out for Tuscan wine, olive oil and cheeses.
