Dramatic volcanic Italian islands
Aeolian Islands holidays offer some of the most beautiful, boat-hopping Italian adventures. The Aeolian seven-island archipelago, which is a Unesco World Heritage Site, lies around 25 kilometres off the coast of Sicily, ringed by the royal-blue Tyrrhenian Sea. The largest island, Lipari, has two ports – one of which has pastel-coloured buildings and plenty of places to dine and relax.
The dramatic island of Vulcano is famous for its therapeutic cures – you can bathe in hot springs and mud baths, climb to its volcano’s crater and bask on its black-sand beaches. Salina is lush with capers and vines and features some extraordinary rock formations – including the scalloped backdrop to Pollara Bay, where boathouses are built into the cliff. Stromboli is the only island with an active volcano – when it’s safe, you can hike up to the summit to see its smoking core.
