With cocktail bars lining the beach, it’s easy to enjoy the sunset over a few drinks. For those who wish to party the night away in clubs, Marbella is only a short drive away.
This area of southern Spain has a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate, meaning San Pedro enjoys hot summers and mild temperatures for the rest of the year.
Late June to early September is the best time for a beach holiday in San Pedro. Temperatures range from 18 to 27°C and the clear blue skies mean you won't see much rain. August brings the highest sea temperature. It reaches a very toasty 24°C. Summer days in San Pedro are long and hot, but they can also be humid. Find some shade during the hottest part of the day if you're not used to spending long periods in the sun. The evenings are cool and balmy. It's the perfect weather for al fresco dining and romantic strolls along the seafront.
Visit the Thursday market between 9am and 3pm to sample fresh produce and do some souvenir shopping. With more than 200 stalls, the market is as popular with tourists as it is with locals.
The beaches near San Pedro are clean, safe, well-organised and cater for all types of holidaymakers. The vast majority are open to the public, although some luxury hotels and resorts have their own private beaches. Most beaches in San Pedro have golden sand and an inviting clear blue sea that warms up nicely in summer. The beaches are popular with families, mature travellers and locals. The atmosphere tends to be relaxed and laid-back. If you're looking for somewhere a little more upbeat and glamourous, take the 20-minute stroll along the coast to Puerto Banus.
San Pedro has family-friendly hotels with pools, kid's clubs and organised activities. Alcantara Beach is one of the best spots for a family beach day. This sandy strip is only a 20-minute stroll from central San Pedro. The beach is clean, the waters calm and many facilities are close by, including free parking, adventure playgrounds, and ice-cream stands. Kids of all ages will love an afternoon at Costa Jump. It's a giant trampoline park that's only a six-minute drive from San Pedro. Costa Jump also has an on-site cafe where you can grab a coffee or some lunch.
Despite undergoing some recent development and refurbishments, San Pedro has retained much of its old-town style and charm. If you try to imagine a picturesque Spanish town, you'll see something that looks a lot like San Pedro. So, expect old churches, ornate fountains, town squares lined with market stalls and romantic cobblestone streets leading past white stone houses and family-owned tapas bars. San Pedro's new town is around the recently developed Boulevard de San Pedro. It's a long walkway with footbridges, cycle paths, an amphitheatre, fountains, play areas and many bars and restaurants.
San Pedro is an ideal destination for young and mature couples looking for a relaxing holiday. Spend your days exploring the cobblestone streets of San Pedro old town or stroll down to the beach for a long, lazy afternoon of sun, sea, and sand. The San Pedro nightlife is chilled and laid-back. Find a little tapas bar for an evening of good food and wine. Or sample some of the freshest seafood in the world from the harbourside restaurants. The restaurants along the Costa Del Sol are famous for their juicy prawn dishes, tangy sardine skewers and rich cuttlefish stews.
By car, you can get to Marbella in less than 20-minutes. It's pretty much a straight drive along the coast. Taxis cost €18-25, although prices are higher if you're travelling back from the Marbella clubs and bars late at night. Unlicensed cabs operate around Marbella and will offer lower rates. You should avoid these and stick with pre-booked cabs and licenced taxis. The L-79 and L-78 bus services run between Marbella and San Pedro every 10 minutes. Tickets cost around €5, and the journey takes just over 20-minutes. Sunday services are limited.
