La Herradura Holidays

A laid-back surf haven in Spain

The sandy horseshoe bay of La Herradura, on Spain’s Costa Tropical, once sheltered the Spanish Armada – and now surfers and sun seekers come here for rest and relaxation. Home to a smart main square, a church and a Moorish lighthouse, the town’s charm lies in how delightfully low-key it is.

In short, La Herradura holidays are about taking it easy. Most visitors enjoy leisurely days spent on the beautiful 2-kilometre stretch of beach – a mix of sand and pebbles, enclosed by two headlands. The water is usually clear, making it great for snorkelling, with surfing, windsurfing and kayaking also on offer. You might equally be happy just pottering between your favourite patch of beach and the cheerful ‘chiringuitos’ (beach bars), which offer delicious plates of locally caught seafood. If you want to branch out there are cliffs, caves and coves along the coast to discover, plus excellent walking in the hills to the north. Whether you’re a beach lover, a surfer or a rambler, holidays to La Herradura will suit you swimmingly.

It’s a stretch of beautiful coastline set between the Costa del Sol and the Almeria Coast. Nearby mountains mean that the scenery is more lush than other parts of Andalusia.
It’s lovely all year round – although relatively mild for this part of Spain. Summers are warm but rarely scorching, and winters are cooler but still pleasant.
The Spanish Armada sheltered from a storm at La Herradura in 1562, on their way to battle the Ottomans. When the storm hit, 25 of the fleet’s 28 ships were destroyed.
