Gateway to the Scottish Highlands
The compact and highly walkable city of Inverness is a gateway to the glorious Scottish Highlands, a hotbed of adventure where castles, lochs, and mountains dominate the landscape. Many use Inverness as a springboard for outdoor pursuits, and the famous Loch Ness lies southwest of the city. But don’t be too hasty in your search for Nessie: the city itself deserves your time, too.
Set on the banks of the River Ness, which flows directly through the city centre from the Moray Firth, Inverness is a lovely place for a riverside stroll, particularly in the summer months. There’s a two-hour circuit to the Ness Islands to spot wildlife – not many cities can offer the chance to spot seals! If it’s a bit drizzly or chilly (this is Scotland, after all), you could always head inside to explore the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, which reveals more about the city’s history and culture.
