Hvar doesn’t have its own airport, so the easiest way to reach the island is by booking flights to Split (SPU) or Dubrovnik(DBV) and to take a ferry from there. Split is closer, and a high-speed ferry can cover the distance within just under an hour, but Dubrovnik is still very doable, with the ferry taking around three and a half hours. Both cities have ferries departing regularly throughout the day, so it’s an easy (and enjoyable) way to access Hvar. Travelling by ferry also makes it easy to explore Hvar on a longer trip to Croatia.
Dubrovnik may be famous for Game of Thrones, but you’ll find a lot of the same type of beautiful historic fortresses and buildings in Hvar, without quite as much tourism (the lack of airport helps with this too!) There are very few places that feel as untouched by time as Hvar, and that makes it a spectacular place to visit. Specific sights to see include the Hvar fortress(featuring panoramic views of the island) and the Stari Grad Plain, a unique site showcasing ancient agricultural norms.
While the history is amazing, Hvar is also full of the simpler pleasures in life- you won’t find more beautiful beaches anywhere in the world. Top beaches to visit include the famous Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) and the secluded Dubovica Beach. Wander the narrow streets of Hvar Town, or rent a car or explore further afield. Whatever your bliss, you’ll find it on Hvar.
