Things to do in Zadar
If you book flights from the UK to Zadar for a long weekend, you'll spend most of your time in the old town, out on a peninsula that juts out into the Adriatic Sea. This is where many of Zadar's best attractions are located. The highlight here is the Church of Saint Donatus, whose image you'll find on practically every Zadar postcard. It's now Zadar's premier concert venue, hosting major events throughout the year.
There are lots of other things to do in the old town. If you love fantastic views, then climbing up the bell tower at the Zadar Cathedral is a must. If you enjoy being in the heart of all the action and people-watching with a coffee in hand, a relaxing sit in Petar Zoranic Square is not to be missed. One of the main sights, however, is the old Roman Forum, which was completed back in the 3rd century.
The best way to enjoy the old town is to stroll around its walls. The 12th-century Zadar city walls became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. Whilst they were given a much-needed renovation in 2020, they still tell an engaging and intriguing story of Dalmatia's history and culture.
Zadar's Seaside
But Zadar isn't all ancient history. Its prime position on the Adriatic coast means it's a top choice for anyone looking for a bit of sun, sea, and sand. Kolovare Beach is located right near the old town, backed by a long promenade where you can hear the music of the waves, quite literally! Zadar is home to one of the world's only ‘sea organs'. Thirty-five organ pipes have been carved into the marble steps leading down to the water, producing a natural soundtrack that is unique and exclusive to Zadar.
Island Hopping from Zadar
If you're planning to stay in Zadar for a little longer, consider engaging in a spot of island hopping. The nearest Croatian island to the city is Ugljan, which is just a 25-minute ferry ride away. Ugljan is known as the ‘green island', filled with pine forests, making it great for hikers and nature lovers. If a chilled-out beach day is more your thing, you can relax on the island of Dugi Otok, around one hour from Zadar. The island's Saharun Beach is one of the most beautiful in all of Dalmatia.
Dining out in Zadar
When it comes to food, you'll find Mediterranean and Dalmatian tastes mixed with Venetian, French, and Austrian influences, thanks to Zadar's history. As a seaside city, seafood is hugely popular here, as is a local sheep's cheese from the island of Pag, just to the north of Zadar. If you're keen to try a traditional local dish, order the pasticada. It's a slow-cooked Dalmatian beef stew in a distinctive and unique sweet and sour sauce. It's usually served with fresh homemade pasta or gnocchi.
