During World War II, Malta was bombarded by the Italians and Germans. It’s something of a miracle any structures survived, but they did. Valletta is a great place to explore.
The baroque St. John’s Co-Cathedral and its golden interior provide some clues as to what Valletta is all about. A fairly unassuming exterior gives way to an over-the-top, fresco-filled interior that, love it or hate it, certainly looks impressive. The cool courtyards of the Grand Master’s Palace are further proof of Malta’s tendency to have unsuspecting exteriors hiding something lavish on the inside. The Royal Armoury here houses nearly 5000 suits of armour and swords.
A nod to Malta’s history can be seen every day at midday, when tourists and locals alike gather near the beautiful Barrakka Gardens to watch as cannons are fired, in a nod to the ancient Maltese method of greeting foreign ships.
Things to do in Malta
Malta is famous for crystal blue waters, and this is particularly true of the spectacular Blue Lagoon. Book a boat trip to visit this beautiful beach on Comino, the smallest of the three Maltese Islands. The boat will drop you off so you can go for a swim, walk along the small uninhabited island, and even enjoy a cocktail or two. Tours will often also take you to see sea caves along the coast, so you can really make a day of it.
For a bit of culture, keen theatregoers should explore the Maltese National Theatre, which was built in 1731 and is one of the oldest in Europe. Small but exquisitely made with individual boxes, ornate columns and a huge golden chandelier, it’s home to year-round performances. For the art buffs, the National Museum of Fine Arts has a huge collection of sculptures and paintings representing Malta’s history, while the Contemporary Art Gallery opened in 2018. This 400-year-old warehouse houses the most innovative, modern offerings from local and international artists.
Visiting the island of Gozo
For a slightly different experience, take a day trip to the neighbouring island of Gozo. Gozo’s principle city, Victoria, feels a bit like Valletta in miniature! Stroll down Republic Street – the main road – to find gardens, arcades and two small opera theatres. Try to visit the alleyways and terraces of the citadel at night for a serene experience. The Gozo Nature Museum is a good addition to your itinerary if you want to find out more about the local flora and fauna. Exhibits include fossils and bone fragments dating back thousands of years.
