Nestled where Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor meets Vrmac, one of the country’s many mountains, the municipality of Tivat is steeped in history, having belonged to the Romans, the Serbs and the Republic of Venice. Here, through the narrow tangled streets of the old town,1,350 steps take you up the colossal ramparts, which kept the city safe from Ottoman invasion and now provide a glorious view over the harbour. Other excursions take you to the verdant Solila Nature Reserve and the Lustica Peninsula, where beach bars thrive and small fishing villages provide stone jetties which are popular with visitors and locals who leap into the glorious water below.
