Rotterdam City Breaks

The Netherlands' vibrant second city

Rotterdam city breaks offer an escape from the ordinary. From architectural rarities to surreal street art and alternative nightlife, this is a destination like no other. Cool to the core, it also offers plenty for shopaholics – lively Lijnbaan was the first pedestrianised shopping street in Europe.

Much of Rotterdam had to be rebuilt after the Second World War, but some of its progressive pre-1940s highlights remain. A walk through the city centre takes in Mediaeval masterpieces, futuristic living concepts, and sky-high giants – it’s no surprise that the city is home to the International Architecture Biennale and the Netherlands Architecture Institute.

Rotterdam’s buzzing heartland is the Cool District. Daytimes here are all about chic boutiques, edgy exhibitions, and funky cafés, while the nights come alive with bustling bars, global bites, and quirky theatre shows. Love dancing into the early hours? Clubs in the central Witte de Withkwartier area blast everything from avant-garde jazz to old school techno.

Love-struck couples adore the Feijenoord district’s romantic blend of city views and trendy food – don’t miss the Fenix Food Factory – while the Noord district offers families park picnics, canal walks, and trips to the roaringly good Rotterdam Zoo.
