Nestled in the foothills of Mount Etna, Catania, the second largest city on the Island of Sicily, is a beautiful place to relax and rejuvenate, as well as soaking up some Sicilian history. June, July and August are high season in Catania thanks to the sultry hot and dry weather they bring. To escape the heat, most people head to the beaches and you'll find local favourites such as La Playa to be heaving with happy sunseekers. There's also a full programme of festivities to enjoy including the midsummer celebrations of Ferragosto in August.
April, May, September and October are wonderful months to fly to Catania. Thanks to its southern position, Catania experiences warm weather and mild sea temperatures during these months, but it doesn't quite see the crowds - or prices - of the peak summer months.
