Alonissos Island Holidays

A tranquil island paradise

Alonissos sits in the northern Sporades archipelago, a short ferry ride from Skiathos and Skopelos. Famous for its lush landscapes of pine forests, crystal-clear waters, and pebble beaches, the island exudes a serene ambiance, making it an ideal retreat for nature lovers and those seeking solitude. It’s also significant because of its National Marine Park, which serves as a sanctuary for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal as well as a colourful array of ocean life.

The island's old village, Chora, is perched on a hilltop and offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and showcases traditional Greek architecture with its narrow streets and whitewashed houses. While it’s less developed than some other Greek islands, Alonissos still has plenty of authentic tavernas, cosy cafés, and charming independent shops to lose yourself in. Whether you’re diving into the rich marine life, hiking along greenery-blanketed trails, relaxing by the shore, or tucking into freshly caught fish, Alonissos is as authentically Greek as it gets.

Your Alonissos Island questions, answered

There isn’t an airport on Alonissos, so the easiest way to reach the island is by flying to Skiathos, then hopping on a ferry. It’s a 2.5 hour journey over the water, which might sound inconvenient, except you’ll be cruising through some of the most beautiful island scenery in the Mediterranean. And when you finally reach your destination you’ll quickly understand why so many people make the trip time and time again.

Quiet beaches with shallow waters, unspoiled natural landscapes, abundant wildlife and warm local hospitality all add up to make Alonissos a fantastic place to take children.
If you’re looking to party, Alonissos probably isn’t for you – Skiathos is a much livelier destination. That doesn’t mean you can’t find a nice spot for a nighttime drink, though. Patitiri is home to a handful of lovely cocktail bars, and there are some very charming tavernas and cafes to be explored in the Old Town.
